Abstract

Two bullocks were presented with avulsion wound involving lower lips and chin following a fall during the cart race. On clinical examination the lower lip and chin muscular attachments to the incisive process of mandible were severed and they were loosely hanging exposing the mandible. The wound was thoroughly cleared with KMnO4 solution followed by Chlorhexidine solution. The animals were sedated with xylazine. Mental nerve block was made using 2% Lignocaine on both the sides. The muscles and subcutaneous tissues were apposed by using chromic catgut No. l. The oral mucosa was closed by continuous sutures using chromic catgut No. l. Postoperatively Streptopenicillin, Meloxicam and B-complex injections were administered for 5 days. A basket shaped net designed and prepared from electrical wire was fitted to chin and interdental space and it was maintained for 7 days to avoid frictional movement of the chin with the ground while feeding. The pressure of the basket over the chin reduced the dead space and seroma formation and animal recovered without complications. In another Khillar calf, bilateral dermoids were noticed attached to third eye lid and limbus. The dermoids were excised under xylazine sedation and retrobulbar block. Corneal opacity and lacrimation subsided gradually.
