Abstract

An Irish setter pup aged 2 months was presented with a history of chronic vomition following intake of feed, and not responding to treatment. The clinical examination revealed pyrexia, poor body condition and signs of mucopurulent nasal discharge, dyspnoea and respiratory crackles on auscultation. A plain lateral view radiograph of the neck and thoracic region revealed air filled and dilated oesophagus all along its length. Contrast radiograph showed the severe dilatation of the oesophagus. Thus the condition was diagnosed as congenital megaoesephagus. Patient was symptomatically treated for pneumonia and vomition. Animal was prescribed Metaclopromide and Cisapride for oral administration, advised to feed the animal from a raised receptacle and to maintain the animal in an upright position for several min after feeding to prolong the favourable gravitation gradient. But the animal succumbed to aspiratory pneumonia few days later.
