A 14-year-old, 3-month pregnant crossbred goat was presented to college hospital with a right udder, which was enlarged and had a necrotic, ulcerating wound since last 3 months. During this period various antibiotics were tried without any success. On examination, the right mammary gland was very much distended with exudates and milky substance. The gland was touching the ground and was being dragged around while the animal walked. The condition was tentatively diagnosed as gangrenous mastitis. Mammectomy was performed under local infiltration anaesthesia using 2% lignocaine HCl. Postoperatively, the animal was treated with 1 g of streptopenicillin daily for 5 days. The goat recovered uneventfully and had a normal parturition. Subsequently, histopathology of the excised tissue ruledout neoplastic condition.
