Abstract

A two-year-old Great Dane dog was presented for the treatment of multiple, distal femoral epiphyseal fractures. The patient was premedicated with xylazine HCI 1 mg/kg body wt. i.m. followed by induction of general anaesthesia by i.v. injection of2.5% thiopental sodium. Joint was flexed as much as possible so as to drive the I.M. pin through the condyles of the femur by closed method. I.M. Pin was fixed all along the femoral shaft. The limb was immobilized with Thomas splint. Radiological examination on 8th day revealed the presence of I.M. pin at the same position and clinical examination revealed attempts of weight bearing. The closed approach of I.M. pinning was found useful as it consumed less time and reduced postoperative dressing.
