Abstract

A 13-year-old Pomeranian dog was brought to the college clinics with the complaint of protruding mass from the perineal region, and difficulty in defecation and urination since last one month. On clinical examination it was revealed that it was a case of perineal hernia. Radiographic findings revealed a solid mass protruding out of the perineum. Surgery was planned accordingly for the management of perineal hernia. The dog was premedicated with atropine sulphate @ 0.04 mg/kg body wt and diazepam @ 1 mg/kg body wt. The induction of anaesthesia was done with thiopental sodium and maintained with 1.5% sevoflurane. Incision made in the swollen area confirmed the enlargement of prostate glands. The prostate glands were removed surgically and urethra was reconstituted with catgut No. 2–0. The protruded mass comprising of the bladder and intestine was replaced to its natural position and hernial ring was managed in routine manner. To overcome the infection ceftriaxone (250 mg) was given intramuscularly twice a day for 5 days along with Melonex (2 mL) and avil (1 mL) daily for 5 days. Antiseptic dressing was done with betadine ointment. Recovery was uneventful. Skin sutures were removed on 9th postoperative day. Histopathological findings confirmed the prostatic hyperplasia. Follow up of the case revealed that the dog was in healthy state even after 3 months.
