Abstract

A cross-bred cow aged eight years was brought to VC and RI hospital by people for Animals (PFA) of Coimbatore. The animal had pendulous udder with chronic mastitis that was refractory to therapy since one year. Clinical examination revealed complete fibrosis of all the quarters and breakdown of supporting ligaments of the udder. The pendulous udder was almost touching the ground restricting the animal's movement. Lacerations and chronic inflammation was noticed in all the four teats and ventral aspect of udder due to constant rubbing against the ground. As a salvage procedure total udder ablation was successfully carried out. During surgical procedure the major vessels external pudic artery and vein, the perineal artery and vein, large subcutaneous mammary vein on either side were doubly ligated with black braided silk. No periopertive complications were encountered and primary healing of wound was noticed.
