Management of cataract in animals poses a great challenge to veterinarians since the treatment protocol is still in its infancy in clinical veterinary practice. Further it requires repeated experience to be familiar with cataract surgery. The goat's eye proved to be an ideal training model for the purpose. Twenty intact goat eyes were procured from a local slaughter house and 10 each were utilized for extracapsular and cryoextraction of lens. The model provided optimal exposure to handle operating microscope for cataract surgery, repeatability of both the techniques of performing cataract surgery and handling of ophthalmic structures as well as suturing of corneal/limbal incision. Overall, it was felt that goat eyes served as an ideal training model to learn and gain expertise in cataract surgery prior to actual clinical surgery.
