Sixty clinically healthy dogs were used to study the endoscopic appearance of normal oesophagus by oesogastrointestenal fiberscopy. The oesophagus at thoracic inlet appeared slit like, which is flaccid in thorax. The pulsation of aorta was clearly seen at the level of base of the heart. Further advancement of the tube visualized gastroesophageal sphincter, which opens as the tip reaches near it. The colour of mucus membrane was found pale pink (46 cases) to grayish pink (14 cases) with smooth and glistering texture. None of the cases showed any type of erythema, erosions or presence of gastric content in oesophagus. The gastro-esophageal sphincter clearly showed demarcation on mucosa and was measured as 36.82±0.93 cm, 49.95±0.56 cm and 61.72±0.79 cm in small, medium and large sized dogs, respectively, from upper incisors.
