The study involved 7 male dogs suffering from perineal hernia. Animals were presented with clinically appreciable swelling in perineal region. The extent of herniation and organ herniated were confirmed by radiography and ultrasonographic examination. Urinary bladder (4) and intestines (3) were the herniated organs. Surgical procedure involved routine castration of the animal, followedn 21 days later, by the repair of perineal defects. Routine suture herniorrhaphy was performed in 4 animals. Polypropylene mesh hernioplasty was done in 3 animals having large perineal defects and weak musculature of the perineal region. Recurrence was recorded in one dog operated for suture herniorrhaphy. It was concluded that in complicated cases of perineal hernia i.e. animals having large body wall defects, poor perineal musculature and recurrences, mesh hernioplasty technique is more useful and is associated with minimal postoperative complications.
