Abstract

During the period of five years (Jan 2006 to Dec 2010) a total of 1490 different surgical cases were recorded, of which 16 cattle (1.07%) had different eye tumours, which involved complete eyeball (8), upper, lower or both eyelids (6), third eyelid (2) and cornea-dermoid cyst (1). The incidence was highest in middle age (6), followed by young (4) and old age (1). Female animals (15) were more affected than males (1), similarly the right eye (10) was more affected than the left (6). Season-wise the incidence of eye tumours was higher in winter (7), followed by monsoon (5) and summer (4). The eye tumours were more often seen in HF crossbreed (13) followed by Kankrej (3). The physiological and haematological parameters did not vary significantly, except that total leucocyte count decreased significantly on 10th postoperative day. Among the 10 cases recorded in the last year, histopathological examination revealed squamous cell carcinoma in 9 cases and chronic inflammatory reaction in one case.
