A retrospective study was conducted on 34 bovine patients suffering from traumatic pericarditis. Based on the history, clinical signs, haematobiochemical and ultrasonograghic evaluation, 14 cases were diagnosed as suppurative pericarditis (group I) and 20 animals as fibrinous pericarditis (group II). In group I animals (n=8), the surgical treatment included 5th rib resection followed by pericardiotomy; and in group II, 5 animals were subjected to 5th rib resection followed by pericardiectomy and remaining animals were given only supportive therapy. The results indicated that early diagnosis and surgical intervention in animals suffering from suppurative pericarditis could prolong the life of animals by a few months to year and in advance pregnant animals, life of new born calves could be saved. Whereas animals suffering from fibrinous pericarditis could not be saved even after pericardiectomy.
