Abstract

In the present study 40 buffaloes suffering from various omaso-abomasal disorders were subjected to clinical, haematobiochemical and ultrasonographic examination and laparorumenotomy. During M-mode ultrasonographic examination, the buffaloes showed no motility of omasum or abomasum. The walls of the omasum and abomasum were observed as linear hyperechoic structures; and the impacted feed contents were seen as anechoic acoustic shadows in both organs. The values of plasma sodium, potassium and chloride decreased as compared to control animals. It was concluded that ultrasonography is a suitable technique for diagnosis of omasal impaction, abomasal impaction/dilatation and omasal impaction associated with diaphragmatic hernia; and hypochloremic and hypokalemic metabolic alkalosis is a diagnostic indicator of abomasal impaction and dilatation.
