Abstract

Postoperative algesia is a major complication and its alleviation is desired to promote the healing process. A therapeutic option with both analgesic and pro-healing properties is required to successfully manage clinical pain. Considering the wound healing effects of curcumin and other constituents of Curcuma longa powder (CLP), we designed this study to explore the analgesic and healing potential of paraffin-based CLP ointments (0.625% and 1.25% w/w) in excisional wound model in Wistar rats. 1.25% CLP ointment application remarkably (P<0.001) increased percent wound closure on days 3, 5, 7, 9, 11 and 14 after surgery, as compared to vehicle control. Further, the total pain scores reduced significantly (P<0.001) on days 3,5, 7 and 9. Hydroxyproline and glucosamine levels also displayed significant increase in the day 14 healing tissue, indicating better collagen deposition and wound maturity. Conclusively, paraffin-based CLP ointment reduced post-surgical pain and promoted skin wound closure.
