Femoral head and neck ostectomy was performed in six dogs suffering from hip joint affections. Conditions diagnosed were hip dysplasia (3), hip luxation (1), femoral head capital fracture (1) and femoral neck fracture (1). Surgical treatment included femoral head and neck ostectomy in cranio-lateral approach, which provided good exposure of the hip joint. No intra-operative complications were noticed. All the dogs showed pelvic limb lameness and mild gait abnormalities due to limb shortening, decreased range of motion and muscle atrophy during the postoperative period. It was concluded that femoral head and neck ostectomy is a simple, affordable salvage procedure to alleviate the pain in the coxofemoral joint.
