Abstract

Among a total of 147 dogs screened, 18 dogs suffering from external ear affections were included in this study. The overall incidence of external ear affections in dogs was 12.24% with an average age of dogs 6.16±0.66 yr. Staphylococcus aureus was found to be the most common (46.66%) bacteria isolated. Cases of otitis externa were managed conservatively and cases of aural haematoma, foreign body in ear canal and growth over pinna were treated surgically. All the dogs recovered without any complications and recurrence. Video otoscopy proved to be a beneficial diagnostic tool to visualize various pathologies of ear canal. Cleaning of the ear canal with an appropriate ear cleanser followed by selection and application of antimicrobial ear drops with systemic antibiotic therapy based on antibiogram was proved effective for treatment of otitis externa in dogs.
