Abstract

The study was conducted to evaluate the role of diagnostic imaging techniques viz. radiography and grey scale real time Bmode ultrasonography for diagnosis of obstructive affections of gastrointestinal tract in dogs and their surgical management. The study included 9 dogs of different breeds and either sex presented with clinical signs of persistent vomition, anorexia, dullness, dehydration, and cessation of defecation. Majority of dogs were male (77.7%) and young animals aged below one year (66.6%). Radiography was diagnostic in 66.6% cases, whereas ultrasonography was helpful to arrive at definitive diagnosis in all the cases (100%). Surgical intervention was done following imaging in all the cases. The obstructions were due to various kinds of foreign bodies viz, nails, mask, washer, sand pieces, rope pieces, scrunchie, slipper’s leather piece, bandages and sewing machine spool, and were retrieved surgically. Eight dogs recovered uneventfully with no recurrence in the follow up period of 6 months, and one dog succumbed to concurrent parvo viral enteritis during the postoperative period.
