The objective of the study was to evaluate suture herniorrhaphy and polypropylene mesh hernioplasty for repair of abdominal hernia in cattle. The study included 16 cows (aged 2 m to 7 yr) with lateral abdominal wall defects. The condition was diagnosed based on clinical appearance, palpation of the mass and ultrasonographic examination. Size of the ring was estimated by manual palpation, ultrasonographic examination and direct visualization at the time of surgery. Suture herniorrhaphy was performed in 13 animals (group I) having smaller defects with less tension at the surgical site. Polypropylene mesh hernioplasty was performed in 3 animals (group II) having large defects with high tension. Abomasum (9), intestines (8) and omentum (4) were the herniated organs. Size of the hernial ring was 12.75±0.75 X 8.54±0.8 cm and 20.17±2.13 X 20.17±1.74 cm in groups I and II, respectively. All the animals recovered smoothly after surgical repair. Ultrasonographic examination showed satisfactory healing at the site of hernia and stability of the polypropylene mesh. Subcutaneous fluid accumulation was recorded in all animals treated with polypropylene mesh. Postoperative follow up for 612 months showed satisfactory recovery and normal physiological activity of all the animals.
