Abstract

Internet is not the enemy just because people become dependent on it. It hm many important and necessary benefits. It is fast, ecologically sound, convenient and informative. In many ways it makes our lives much simpler. In other ways it makes our lives complex too. Internet provides an escape from reality and everyday problems just like alcohol or drugs. Some argue that the interaction with other people on internet fills a social void. People can assume new identities; others interact with that identity and the person may assume these on-line relationships are the same as the real thing. Internet becomes a problem when people become so engrossed and enmeshed in on-line activities, and their “other” lives to the point of neglecting their health, relationships, jobs, and other responsibilities. If your Internet use pattern interferes with your life in any way shape or form, (eg. does it impact your work, family life, relationships, school, etc.) you may have a problem. In addition, if you find that you are using the Internet as a means to regularly alter your mood you may be developing a problem. It is important to note that it is not the actual time spent on-line that determines if you have a problem, but rather how that time you spend impacts your 1ife. The present study is a maiden exploratory study as it enables us to observe and measure the level of Internet addiction. The purpose of the study is:

To study and find out the Internet addiction among young net users (under-graduate students) of Lucknow University.

To study and find out gender difference between Addicted and Average users $Internet.

To study and find out the changes taking place in the social behaviour of the addicted due to over access of internet.
