Consultant (Water Resources) Formerly Chairman, Central Water Commission and ex-officio Secretary,
Based on his experience of working with the dam safety panels, the author summarises the findings of hydrologic safety rehabilitation of dams, including comparatively small dams in India. The adaptation of the national hydrologic safety standards to the exsisting dam are discussed. The current lacunae in not using the results of the hydrologic studies into the relevant hydraulic studies is illustrated. The use of non-uniform, steady, open channel flow hydraulics, as a routine practice is advocated. Relating the hydrologic, hydraulic and geologic studies for understanding the erosion and its effect on the safety, is discussed. The need for using good practices, instead of old thumb rule, for the comparatively small dams is emphasized. A number of illustrative case studies are included.
