2-Hydroxy-3-methoxy benzaldehyde oxime (2H3MBO) as a photometric reagent for the extractive spectrophotometric determination of cerium (IV) (Ce(IV)) is presented in this paper. The reagent 2H3MBO gave instantaneous and light pink colour with Ce(IV) in the pH range of 3.2–4.4. The system obeys Beer's law in the concentration range of 1.0–50.0 μg/mL at 440 nm. The limit of detection (LOD) is calculated by using standard deviations of a blank solution at confidence limit 95.0%, which is found to be 0.336μg/mL. The stoichiometry of the complex is established as 2:1 (M:L) by Job's method of continuous variation and confirmed by a mole ratio method. The standard deviation and the coefficient of variance are presented. The results of the prescribed procedure applied for the determination of the micro amounts of Ce(IV) in various synthetic samples.
