Cognitive radio has been evolving as a promising technological solution to the problem of frequency spectrum underutilization over the past decade in wireless communication industry. Fixed spectrum allocation policy and increasing demand for frequency spectrum usage have opened the door for the development of a smart device that can be programmed and configured to utilize the spectrum holes in efficient manner. An overview of cognitive radio is presented in this paper and its applications are also reviewed. Future scope of cognitive radio is discussed and conclusions are drawn at the end of this paper.
