Power quality is an important term of an electrical power system. The term power quality means, the supply voltage at the load end must have fundamental components only and also in the declared magnitude range under all the conditions. To maintain the quality of power we need some Passive and Active filters. In recent days active filters are more common because of their advantages over others. This paper presents a literature review of active power filters based on objectives, configurations, circuit topology, converter type, supply system and control strategies. Some technical aspects, economic considerations and their selection for specific applications are also discussed. It also includes comparison between different kind of filters and active harmonic conditioners. The various impacts of poor power quality, their effects and solutions are proposed with respect to present nonlinear load patterns of the electric power system.
