Smart grid technology will fundamentally change the current distribution way, it not only helps to reduce the power demand, cost savings butalso can significantly improve power systemreliability and efficiency. Smart grid can be used for real-time monitoring of power using sensors and new network technology. It can be used to automatically control power flow. However, the smart grid also brings security and privacy, large-scale distributed sensor management system and other complex issues such as single-line-to-ground fault, double-line-to ground fault, line-to-line fault, etc. This paper presents the review of smart grid and functional characteristics of smart grid technology, summed up the research situation at India and abroad, the significance of developing smart grid in modern power system, cited several key technologies of smart grid and the problems and challenges.
