Abstract

Amongst food animals, goat was the first animal to be domesticated. A small goat farm comprising 10 does and a buck was initiated in Oct., 2006 at Apollo College of Veterinary Medicine, Jaipur for demonstration purpose. It multiplied to 34 by June-July, 2008. It had an outbreak of acute coccidiosis with 24% mortality in weaned kids (Gr.III). Leftover growers (Gr.II) and adults (Gr.I) were immune carriers and suffering from sub clinical disease with poor growth and feed conversion efficiency. En-mass flock treatment with Sulphamethoxazole and Trimethoprim bolus (Intrima) and Sulphadimidine bolus (Pabadinea) besides symptomatic supportive therapy followed by improved flock hygiene, management, housing etc., effectively controlled the disease in the flock. Importance of goat keeping in upliftment of socio-economic status of goat keepers, awareness about profitable goat farming with zero financial input have been discussed.
