Fatal Cytauxzoonosis in a Kitten

A fatal case of feline cytauxzoonosis is described and discussed in this report. Four month old male kitten was referred at the hospital with the history of anorexia, prostration, anaemia and pyrexia. Detailed examination revealed poor general condition, rough coat, marked emaciation, dullness, depression, prostration, inability to get up, pyrexia (104.6o F), dyspnoea, tachycardia, pale mucus membranes and pinna, low haemoglobin (4.2, g/dl), low haematocrit (10%), normal leukocyte count (6.2 x10³ cu.mm.) and presence of “signet ring” shaped and bipolar oval “safety pin” shaped piroplasms in erythrocytes resembling with those of Cytauxzoon felis.
