Abstract

Application of ultrasonography for studying reproductive functions and pregnancy diagnosis in animal sciences is a recent development. A real- time B-mode ultrasonic scanning of uterus appears to offer an accurate, rapid, safe and practical means of pregnancy diagnosis. It produces moving image of uterus, foetal fluids, foetus, foetal heart beats and placentomes. It is also important for the determination of foetal number and estimation of gestation age of foetus.

The cases of early embryonic mortality which can be misdiagnosed as pregnant by serum progesterone estimation can be detected by ultrasonography more accurately. Though ultrasound technique is a wonderful diagnostic aid, it was only restricted to the field of human medicine till few years back. But now a days due to advancements of the science and technology ultrasound is being employed in Veterinary science under field condition. In this review, we have attempted to compile and summarize the comparative development of early concepts of buffalo and cattle examined by ultrasonography.
