Ventral Hernia in a Heifer and its Surgical management

A crossbred heifer was presented with the history of horn injury and swelling at the right lower flank region. On clinical examination and palpation, swelling was soft in consistency and revealed its reducible nature. Hernial ring could not be palpated and surgical repair was attempted. The organ herniated were loops of intestine which were voluminous, edematous and congested. Organ was repositioned and herniated ring was closed by overlapping mattress sutures. The incisional site was reinforced with fascia and the skin was apposed with horizontal mattress suture pattern. The calf recovered successfully.
