Perineal Swelling in Dogs - Ultrasonographic/Radiological diagnosis and management

The study was conducted on five adult dogs, three males and two females. There was a big swelling over the perineal area. The swelling developed due to constant straining. On palpation, the swelling was soft in males but hard in one female. The radiography revealed radiolucent shadow with radio-opaque density. The ultrasonography revealed enlarged hyper-echole image of enlarged prostate gland, enlarged anechoic urinary bladder and hyper-echoic intestine. The surgical intervention of the perineal swelling showed enlarged prostate gland, distended urinnary bladder and intestinal loops as depicted on ultrasonography. The prostate gland was removed. The urinary bladder was put back into its original position after drainage of the urine. Similarly intestine was also replaced tio its original position. The pelvic diaphragm was rapired. The overlying muscles and skin were closed. Post-operative case of antibiotic, anti-inflammatory drugs. B.-Complex and daily antiseptic dressing continued till recovery. Four dogs out of five made uneventful recovery. In fifth; the histopathology of hard mass revealed it to be a case of lipoma.
