Achillies Tendon Rupture and its Surgical Repair in a Dog

An one year old male dog was referred for acute non-weight bearing lameness and plantigrade stance with left hock touching the ground due to trauma. The case was diagnosed as complete achilles tendon rupture and surgical repair was undertaken. Post-operatively, the limb was immobilized with modified Thomas splint for four weeks. After four weeks, the dog was found able to bear partial weight. The splint was removed and a simple padded bandage was applied for another one month and passive physiotherapy was advocated. Full recovery with complete weight bearing with no signs of lameness or swelling at the surgical site was observed at four months post-operatively.
