Cross-pinning and Lag-screw Compression for the Management of Supracondylar and Intercondylar Femoral Fracture in a Dog

Abstract

An intact 22 months old Dachshund bitch was radiographically diagnosed with complete, displaced, oblique supracondylar fracture with the concurrent intercondylar component of the left femur. After open reduction the splayed fractured condyles were stabilized and compressed using cortical screw in lag screw compression technique, while the reconstructed condyles were stabilized with supracondylar region by cross-pinning technique using K-wires. Post-operatively, the limb was externally supported by applying Robert Jones bandaging and the regular manual physiotherapy was provided. The animal started complete weight bearing in the 2nd post-operative week while complete radiographic union was found by the 6th post-operative week.
