Comparative Studies on the Efficacy of Toltrazuril and Amprolium in the Treatment of Caprine Coccidiosis

Abstract

The prevalence of Eimeria species and compare efficacy of Toltrazuril and Amprolium against natural infection of Caprine coccidiosis was studied. Of the total 384 fecal samples examined for Eimeria, 209 (54.42%) were found infected with seven species of Eimeria. Amongst the identified species, Eimeria arloingi was the commonest (62.20%) followed were E. christenseni, E. ninakohlyakimovae, E. parva, E. fauri, E. caprina and E. kocharii with incidence of 46.88, 40.66, 29.18, 25.35, 19.61 and 10.52 percent, respectively. Kids (< 6 months) had higher prevalence of Eimeria than growers (<6–12 months) and adults (>12 months). Twenty four Eimeria positive animals were randomly divided into three equal groups. Group A was treated with Toltrazuril (20mg/kg b.wt. once) and Group B was treated with (50mg/kg b.wt. for 5 days) while Group C was control. On day 7th post treatment, all goats of Group A stopped shedding oocysts while 4/8 (50.00%) goats of Group B stopped shedding oocysts. After the treatment, goats of Group A gained 2.67 kg b.wt. over a period of 28 days compared 1.87 kg weight in group B. The lowest weight gain (0.21 kg) was in goats of Group C (untreated control). It was concluded that control of goat coccidiosis through single treatment of Toltrazuril is economical and beneficial.
