Clinical Management of Cutaneous Vasculitis in a Horse

A bay coloured five years old male horse was presented with primary complaint of swelling on neck, right abdomen and hind limbs. The horse had problem in taking feed and water due to rigidity of neck muscles. Laboratory examination revealed neutrophilic leucocytosis, normocytic normochromic anaemia, absence of haemoprotozoa and elevated levels of alkaline phosphatase and creatinine kinase. The serum was negative for Trypanosomosis/Equine Viral Arteritis/Equine Granulomatous Enteritis/Purpura Haemorrhagica (Streptococcal antigens). The case was then differentially diagnosed as Cutaneous Vasculitis. Antibiotics, corticosteriods, liver tonic and appetite stimulants were given for more than a week and kept indoor under observation.The swelling started receding from the face and neck and animal began to take feed adequately during the course of treatment. The animal was cured within eighteen days of treatment and discharged with the advisement of treatment.
