Abstract

This review presents a comprehensive summary of external antiparasitic drugs evolved in recent years with special reference to development of new ingredients and formulations for effective control of external parasites in canines. Old chemical groups (organochlorines, organophosphates, carbamates) have been supplanted by new generation drugs (amitraz, synthetic pyrethroids, phenylpyrazoles, neonicotinoids, oxadiazines, spinosyns). In addition, insect and mite growth inhibitors have emerged and are used in animals or in the environment, either alone or in combination. At the same time, ease-of-use has been improved with development of spot-on formulations. The various active molecules and their formulations alone or in combination along with their activity spectrum and safety measures are discussed.
