Clinical Management of Canine Otocariasis

Abstract

Thirty dogs with canine otitis externa were evaluated for otocariasis. Examination confirmed two were positive for Otodectus cyanotis, one for Demodex canis and one for Rhipicephalus sanguinus. Clinical symptoms observed iwere severe head shaking, ear scratching and ear pinna erythema. Otocariasis due to Otodectus cyanotis and Rhipicephalus sanguinus infestations were successfully treated with Ivermectin @ 200 μg/kg body weight s/c two times at two weeks apart. Otocariasis associated with demodicosis was treated with daily oral administration of Ivermectin @200 to 600 body weight for four weeks.
