Clinical Management of Porcine Scabies in a Organized farm

Abstract

An outbreak of Porcine Scabies was reported in an organized piggery farm included 120 large white yorkshire. 30 Pigs under age of 3 years was found infested. Clinical signs consisted of alopecia, crusts, ulcerations and superficial skin fissures along with severe pruritus and itching. Lesions were present around base of ear, neck and groin region. Skin lesions were examined by 10% KOH digestion method for presence of eggs and adult mites of Sarcoptes scabie. The affected pigs were separated from healthy groups and divided into two equal groups. In group A animals were treated with single dose of Ivermectin @ 200 μg/kg body weight, subcutaneously and in group B animals were treated with two doses of Ivermectin @200 μg/kg body weight. Clinical examination revealed that complete disappearance encrustation, red pimple and erection of new hair from alopecia area in both the treatment group. Parasitological examination revealed no evidence of adult mites in both the groups, while presence of Sarcoptes eggs were detected in group A and not detected in the group B. Single dose of ivermectin can kill only adult and immature forms of Sarcoptes scabie and eggs were not being killed but in group B, second dose of ivermectin eliminate eggs of Sarcoptes.
