Clinical Management of Canine Bacterial Dermatitis

Abstract

Twenty nine dogs positive for bacterial dermatitis had lesions of multifocal alopecia, erythema, folliculitis, comedone, nodulocystic lesions papule, pustule with oozing of purulent discharge, hair matting with scab formation and itching. Staphylococcus spp. was the main causative organism in cases of pyoderma. Majority of infection showed highest antibacterial sensitivity of Cephalexin. Haematobiochemical parameters, haemoglobin (Hb), packed cell volume (PCV), total leukocyte count (TLC), Differential Leukocyte Count (DLC), Total Erythrocyte Count (TEC), total protein, albumin, calcium, phosphorus, glucose, sodium and potassium were studied. The mean Hb, PCV and TEC levels showed a significant decrease in bacterial dermatitis. Leucocytosis along with neutrophilia and non significant alterations in total protein, calcium, phosphorus, sodium and potassium and glucose level were observed in all dermatitis cases. The animals treated with Cephalexin (13 no.), Ciprofloxacin (9 no.) and Erythromycin (7 no.) started showing improvement within 72 hours of treatment.
