Abstract

Fifty dogs were diagnosed of Pseudomonas otitis based on otoscopic, radiographic, cytological and cultural examinations. Of these, 12 had concurrent infection of Malassezia pachydermatis also. The head shaking, ear scratching, pain on manipulation of pinna, excessive aural discharge were most common clinical features persisting for 4–10 months with no response to routine treatment. Clinical and otoscopic examinations revealed ulcerated ears filled with exudates and severe pain. Ear canal stenosis was evident on radiographic examination in 20 dogs. These were treated with cleaning of ear canals with saline/povidone-iodine flushing and aspiration after Xylazine administration, limited use of cotton tip buds to dry canal, removal of foreign bodies, Meloxicam, oral Prednisolone, Amikacin ear drops, oral Marbofloxacin and Ketoconazole (in dogs with concurrent infection of Malassezia pachydermatis). Forty three dogs (86%) responded favourably with ceasing of exudates, absence of pain, no odour and almost no head shaking at the end of one month therapy.
