A Haemato-Biochemical Study of Postpartum Buffaloes with Uterine Prolapse

Abstract

Twenty buffaloes with post-partum genital prolapse and six normally parturated buffaloes (control group) were investigated for haematological and serum macro mineral contents. Haematological parameters revealed significantly higher total leucocytes on day 0 when compared to control and day 7. There was a drastic decrease in serum calcium (7.25±0.23 v 10.09 ± 0.08 mg/dl), phosphorus (3.88 ± 0.15 v 4.96 ± 0.03 mg/dl) and magnesium (1.50 ±0.53 v 2.40 ± 0.53 mg/dl) levels in prolapsed animals as compared to controls (P<0.01). The haemoglobin concentration did not differed significantly between normal buffaloes and those with uterine prolapse on day 0 and 7. It was concluded that deficiency of calcium, phosphorus and magnesium might be the possible cause of genital prolapse in buffaloes.
