Abstract

Twenty four non-pregnant Kankrej cows suffered with recurrent cervico-vaginal prolapse on removal of truss were studied gyneco-clinically irrespective of age and parity. The affected cows were divided equally into four groups and retention of prolapsed mass was attempted by Buhner's, Button and Mattress sutures apart from application of Truss. The pre-treatment biometrics of prolapsed genitalia revealed its soft consistency in majority of cows (17, 70.83%) in comparison to hard (7, 29.17%) whereas, color ranged from dark (15/24, 62.50%) to pale (9/24, 37.5%). The length and circumference ranged from 7–28 and 22-72cm to its maximum extent between 10–25 and 25-45cm each in 20 cows, respectively. The wound and laceration on prolapse mass was 8.33 and 45.83 per cent, respectively while 5 and 14 cows (20.83 and 58.33%) had copious and scanty genital discharge with non-fouling character in 13 cows (54.16%). The suitability of managerial approaches adjudged by post treatment straining of animals, nature of genital discharge, degree of edema, tearing and recurrence of prolapsed mass revealed the effectiveness of Button and Buhner's sutures in retention of prolapsed mass with minimum complications whereas Mattress sutures resulted into maximum complications with recurrence of prolapse in all animals, while Truss approach provided only transitory relief to affected animals.
