A Haemato-Biochemical and Therapeutic Study of Postparturient Haemoglobinuria in Buffaloes

Ten buffalo patients showing symptoms of haemoglobinuria were included in the present study. The post-parturient haemoglobinuria was observed in buffaloes mostly under 3^rd and 4^th lactation, usually one month after parturition. The disease was observed mostly during winter season. The major clinical signs recorded were haemoglobinuria, inappetance, decreased ruminal movements or ruminal stasis, subnormal to normal rectal temperature, increased pulse, dyspnoea, constipation or dry and firm faeces, dehydration, anaemia, icterus, weakness and decreased milk yield. There was marked decrease in haemoglobin, PCV, TEC and serum inorganic phosphorus whereas increase in TLC, granulocytes percent, serum total bilirubin, ALT and AST in diseased animals. The urine of diseased animals was found positive for leucocytes, nitrates, protein, blood, ketone and glucose. The animals showed good response to treatment with sodium acid phosphate intravenously and supportive therapy.
