The effects of low-intensity Helium-Neon laser irradiation on wound healing in clinical open wounds on bovine calves was evaluated. 1cm2 of healing tissue was collected aseptically on day 10th, 20th and 30th (4 calves at each interval in both groups) post treatment and subjected to histological and histochemical studies for assessing the influence of low level laser therapy on rate of wound healing. Histological studies showed intense proliferation of mature fibroblast and reduced cellular infiltration along with extensive neovascularisation in laser treated group of calves as compared to control group. Histochemical studies revealed that deposition of collagen, elastin, reticulin fibers along with mucopolysaccharide was more in laser irradiated group as compared to control group calves. It was concluded that laser irradiation is beneficial for wound healing.
