Nystatin for the Management of Mycotic Intramammary Infections in Crossbred cows

Abstract

An investigative study on mycotic causes of sub-clinical intramammary infections (IMI), antifungal drug sensitivity and in-vivo use of Nystatin was carried in crossbred cows. Total 184 quarter milk samples from 46 lactating crossbred cows were screened for presence of sub-clinical intramammary infections and identification of causal organisms. Of 32 fungal isolates identified, twelve (37.50%) were recovered as mono-microbic cause. Whereas, twelve isolates (37.50%) were recovered from mixed infections with bacteria and remaining 8 isolates with mixed infections of moulds. Total 20 different fungal isolates were subjected to in-vitro antifungal drug sensitivity against Amphotericin-B, Clotrimazole, Nystatin and Fluconazole. Based on sensitivity, 50, 000 IU Nystatin in 10 ml of sterile distilled water was administered into 8 selected quarters with fungal mastitis once daily for five consecutive days. Seven quarters did not showed any growth in quarter milk samples collected 15 days after last infusion indicating 87.50% efficacy of Nystatin in fungal sub-clinical intramammary infections.
