Clinical Management of Acute Multiple Abscess in a Asian Elephant (Elephas maximus)

An elephant was suffering with a hard painful swelling at left fore limbs, due to metallic trauma. After examination, the acute multiple abscess was opened surgically and locally treated with Hydrogen peroxide, Acriflavin solution and Tincture iodine. Under local infiltration, two incisions each at proximal and ventral border were made to establish better drainage as two abscesses of about 14 inches in length and 4 inches width were present one beneath the other. Following treatment surgically and therapeutically, swelling reduced drastically with antiseptic perfusion being given continuously for 15 days. Animal recovered uneventfully.
