CIDR and PGF2for Induction of Cyclicity in Postpartum Anestrus Crossbred cows

Abstract

The study was undertaken to evaluate the efficacy of intra vaginal progesterone insert, CIDR and PGF2 on induction of estrus in post-partum lactating anoestrus dairy cows. Cows with history of post-partum anoestrum were randomly selected for the present study. All selected animals were subjected for gynaeco-clinical examination and white side test to rule out utero-ovarian pathology and sub clinical endometritis respectively. Animals were randomly placed in two groups viz Group I and II. Group I received CIDR inserts for 7 days and PGF2 on the day of CIDR removal while group II animals were treated as control. 83.33% (10/12) of group I animals exhibited estrus symptoms between 36 and 72 hours after CIDR removal against 16.66% (2/12) in untreated control cows. Pregnancy rate in treated cows was 40% (4/10). The present study shows that CIDR could be effectively utilized to induce estrus in anestrus postpartum cows across several heterogenous environments under field conditions.
