Surgical Management of Intestinal Volvulus in a Graded Murrah Buffalo

A graded Murrah she buffalo was presented after futile medical treatment for severe colic and passing dung mixed with mucus for last four days. Clinically, it was anorectic with tachycardia and hyperthermia. Per rectal examination revealed almost empty rectum with small and few hard balls of tarry coloured dung, heavily coated with mucus and blood streaks. A hard mass could be palpated at right sub iliac region per rectally. History, clinical signs and rectal examination confirmed intestinal obstruction and emergency right flank laparo enterectomy and end to end anastomosis was performed. Post-operatively, the animal recovered with complete restoration.
