Prevalence and Clinical Management of Periodontal Disorders in Lambs and Kids

The prevalence of periodontal disorders in lambs and kids was studied with special reference to gingival hyperplasia, covering 12.5 lakhs of sheep and 60,000 goats during the period 2010–2014. The prevalence in sheep was 30% and in goats 10%. The prevalence of both acute and chronic gingival hyperplasia was reported in all the lambing seasons. The prevalence was recorded only in lambs and kids but not in their mothers. The prevalence was high in winter season (18%) and less in summer (12%). The prevalence was more in the age group of 1–30 days (60%) and less in 31–45 days (40%). The prevalence was more in lambs (30%) and less in kids (10%). The prevalence was more in lambs and kids confined in coops (98%) and less in free reared ones (2%). The clinical management of periodontal disorders with reference to gingival hyperplasia in lambs and kids were studied. Calcarea flour, Ceftriaxone and Tazobactum combination and Povidone iodine and Metronidazole ointment were found effective.
