Diagnosis and Management of Megaesophagus Disorder in a Dog

Megaesophagus is a condition in canines, where the esophagus fails to propel the food down into the stomach. The ingesta pools in esophagus that becomes perceptibly enlarged and this patho-morphological aberration results in recurrent bouts of regurgitation. In other medical conditions like the autoimmune state Myasthenia gravis (MG), Megaesophagus is only one of the clinical manifestations. A careful medical workup is therefore mandated to identify the condition and treat accordingly. In simple megaesophagus condition, most of the companion dogs continue to live a healthy life with proper care by the owners with timely veterinary medical support.
