Conjunctival Pedicle Grafting for Management of Staphyloma-A Report of 2 Dogs

A two years old female Pug and a four months old German Shepherd dogs were presented with history of unilateral corneal wound of traumatic origin. Detailed examination revealed corneal ulceration, oedema and protruding of iris through a full thickness wound on cornea in both cases and was diagnosed as staphyloma. Under general anaesthesia, surgical correction was resorted to. The eyes were cleaned and irrigated with 0.5% Povidone iodine solution prior to surgery, adhesions of iris with corneal wound margin was gently cleared and partly resected and protruding iris was carefully repositioned into anterior chamber. A conjunctival pedicle graft was created by measuring area of ulceration and by rotating a finger shaped piece of bulbar conjunctiva onto corneal surface. This was followed by topical anti-inflammatory and antibiotic eye drops. Routine post-operative therapy was given. Both animals had an uneventful recovery.
