Abstract

The study was conducted to investigate effect of different therapies at calving on postpartum fertility and blood biochemical constituents around peri and postpartum period in HF crossbred cows. The twenty four Holstein friesian cows in Group-I and Group-II were injected Methyl ergometrine (5 mg) and Dinoprost tromethamine (PGF, 25 mg) i/m, respectively immediately after parturition. The cows of Group-III received herbal tablets (10 tab, bid, PO) for first 10 days post-partum and Group-IV received 5 ml normal saline i/m and served as control. Overall, 83.33 percent (5/6) cows in each Group-I and Group-II exhibited first postpartum estrus within mean intervals of 36.33 ± 1.17 and 26.50 ± 0.85 days, respectively, while in Group-III and Group-IV, 66.67 percent (4/6) and 50.0 percent (3/6) cows expressed postpartum estrus with mean intervals of 39.00 ± 2.84 and 48.00 ± 2.39 days, respectively. The postpartum estrus interval was significantly reduced in all three treatment groups as compared to control. The conception rate was highest in Group-I and II (83.33% each) followed by Group-III (66.67%) and Group-IV (50.0%). The mean plasma glucose levels significantly increased the 3rd post-partum day and thereafter significantly declined on 10th post-partum day. The mean serum total protein concentrations were fluctuated non-significantly between Group-I and III while it differed significantly between Group-II and IV at different time interval from prepartum to postpartum period. The mean serum total cholesterol in all treatment and control groups were found to be non-significantly decreased at 3rd day of parturition and there after constant increasing trends were observed in all groups.
