Surgical Management of Intestinal Obstruction in a Bull

A bull was presented with history of cessation of defecation since five days, reduced water intake and complete anorexia since eight days. The animal showed pale mucus membrane, slight elevated temperature, dehydration and bilateral abdominal distension. Per-rectal examination revealed ruminal impaction and empty rectum with blood tinged mucus. Based on history and signs, the case was diagnosed as intestinal obstruction and exploratory laparotomy was attempted. The hard mass like faecolith was obstructed in jejunum. Under standard surgical procedure the same was removed and surgical wound was closed. The animal passed faeces on second day and showing complete recovery on fifth day.
